Georgia not prepared to join NATO

Georgia will have to meet a series of tough requirements to join NATO.

According to sources in the General Staff of Georgia's Armed Forces, the Georgian Defence Ministry delegation to the "19+1" hearings at the NATO headquarters has been demanded to complete transformation of the Armed Forces and the General Staff into a civil structure.

Georgia was also recommended to unite its Air Force and Navy into a single structure.

Georgia's military source said Brussels was not happy about the fact that Georgia's National Guards are not part of the republican Armed Forces and Interior Ministry Troops.

Under-funding is still a grave problem facing the Defence Ministry. The alliance made it clear that if Georgia cut allocations on the Army, it would hardly be admitted to NATO.

Georgia announced its intention to join the alliance at NATO's Paris summit late last year. Integration into Euro-Atlantic agencies is a priority of Georgia's foreign policy.
