According to Pentagon officials, Chinese fighters conducted a dangerous maneuver near Boeing RC-135, a strategic reconnaissance aircraft the US Air Force, over the Yellow Sea.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said at a press briefing that the Pentagon was looking into the information about the interception of the RC-135 by a Chinese aircraft on September 15 above the Yellow Sea, approximately 12.8 km to the east off the Shandong Peninsula. The crew of the RC-135 perceived one of the maneuvers of the Chinese aircraft as dangerous.
However, Cook did not specify how close the Chinese aircraft approached the the RC-135. "My understanding is, and I don't have all the details, but the pilot believed that the plane passed in an unsafe fashion in front of the plane," Cook said without providing any more details about the incident.
On September 21, a Chinese fighter flew dangerously close to a US spy plane near the uninhabited Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu) in the East China Sea. The islands are a subject of a long-standing dispute between Beijing and Tokyo.
