Trishul frigate to make voyage from St. Petersburg to India

The frigate Trishul, built at the Baltiisky Zavod association in St. Petersburg for the Navy of India, will be turned over to the customer on Wednesday.

The frigate is the second of the three ships built by the Baltiisky Zavod association for India's Navy. The principal ship, the Talwar, was turned over to the customer on June 18. The marine part of the running trials of the third frigate, the Tabar, is now under way.

The frigate is designed to carry out combat operations against surface ships and submarines in ocean and sea regions, as well as to repel attacks of air-attack means, both on its own and as part of a formation of ships as an escort ship.

The interstate contract for the building and delivery of three frigates for the Navy of India was signed on November 17, 1997.

As the specialists stressed after the conclusion of the contract, it is unique not so much because of its financial scale (about one billion U.S. dollars) as by reason of the fact that warships, designed specially for the customer, are supplied to him.
