The parliament of Adjaria acted Saturday to renew the national state of emergency and set a daily curfew for all of Adjaria. As relayed to Rosbalt by the parliament, the action was a response to the adoption by Georgia's parliament on April 22 of a special resolution on the situation in Adjaria. The resolution contains specific recommendations vis-а-vis Adjaria for the president and government of Georgia.
Specifically, it calls for Georgia's general prosecutor's office to prepare criminal cases against anyone who violates human rights in Adjaria, and it calls on the appropriate bodies in Georgia to prepare to disarm illegal armed bands in the autonomy and to disarm the general citizenry of Adjaria. It further calls on the Georgian Foreign Ministry the situation in Adjaria to world attention.
The situation in and around Adjaria remains extremely tense. The government of Adjaria says it has information that Georgia is preparing a military incursion.
Parliament imposed the emergency in Adjaria on November 23, 2003, in the wake of the triumph of the so-called 'velvet revolution of roses.' It was then temporarily relaxed for the presidential and parliamentary elections in Georgia.
