Believers marked 95th anniversary of Mother Teresa birth

The 95th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa marked Friday in her hometown, Skopje, Macedonia.

Lighted candles, wreaths and flowers were placed in front of a 2-meter-tall (6-foot) bronze statue of the Roman Catholic nun who died in 1997 in Calcutta, India.

"Mother Teresa often said the fruit of serving and love is peace. Her motto 'Do small things with love' will always echo in the world," Skopje's Roman Catholic Bishop Kiril Stojanov said at a Mass in honor of the nun.

Born Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, Mother Teresa left the Balkans at age 18 and spent most of her life caring for the sick and poor in India.

In 1950, she launched the Missionaries of Charity group, which spread across the world, winning her acclaim and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa in 2003, reports the AP.

"We are still looking for another acceptable miracle", Sister Nirmala told newsmen after the usual morning prayers at mother's tomb located on the ground floor of the MoC headquarters.

"We are constantly seeking her blessings so that we may follow her in spirit. May her soul rest in peace," Sister Nirmala said.

Meanwhile, a steady stream of visitors poured in at Mother's tomb since early morning. Notable among them were a group of young students from Japan who had come to pay their respects to Mother, informs Express India.
