Pakistan is intensifying the control of its border with Afghanistan. Additional special forces and some army units have already been sent to border areas. Barbed wire is being put along the borderline. The length of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan totals over 2,400 kilometres. Earlier there was practically no control over the border. Only a few checkpoints operated on major roads. According to the Pakistani agency On-Line, the goal of all the measures being taken at the border with Afghanistan is to prevent Taliban militants, their leaders and primarily Arab terrorists from al Qaeda from attempting to pass over to Pakistan. Pakistani authorities have also demanded local Pashtoon leaders to report the emergence of any strangers or suspicious people on their territories.
