Tropical Storm Delta weakens in central Atlantic

At 4 p.m. EST (2100 GMT), the 25th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season had top sustained wind of 40 mph (64 kph), just above the threshold for a tropical storm, the National Hurricane Center reported.

Delta was centered about 1,170 miles (1882.5 kilometers) southwest of the Azores and was moving northeast at about 16 mph (26 kph). Its winds were expected to continue weakening.

The six-month Atlantic hurricane season officially ends Wednesday, but forecasters warn that tropical storms and hurricanes can develop in December, AP reports.
