UN Secretary General Kofi Annan calls for further help to Afghanistan

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan calls on the international community to continue helping Afghanistan, says Kofi Annan's message to the 29th session of the Foreign Ministers, members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference which is being held in Hartuma.

The fact that the Loya Jirga emergency session in Afghanistan last week was a success marked a very important step towards peace and development, Annan said.

The Secretary General thanked the Islam Conference Organisation member-countries for "their valuable political support in this issue".

"With the formation of the temporary administration the international community's attention must be focused on reconstruction issues," Kofi Annan stressed and urged the international community to do all they could to prevent "attention and help to this country devastated by the war from decaying at this crucial moment."
