Nicolas Sarkozy Hospitalized after Collapsing

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was "doing well" in hospital after collapsing while joggling on weekend, his chief of staff said, as the ailing leader was urged to cut back on his gruelling schedule.

Sarkozy, 54, collapsed Sunday while running at his weekend retreat near the Versailles palace west of Paris. He was taken to a military hospital in the capital by helicopter after the incident, AFP reports.

His office described the incident as a minor fainting spell and said he never lost consciousness.

Sarkozy fell victim to what officials qualified as a "vasovagal episode" as he ran in 84-degree summer weather on the grounds of the Lanterne hunting lodge.

Sarkozy's office said that neurological tests administered at Val de Grace were normal but that the president would be hospitalized overnight for further monitoring of his heart, The Washington Post reports.

Meanwhile Sarkozy won’t attend a ceremony today with Finance Minister Christine Lagarde on lending to companies as he was scheduled to do, his office said. Lagarde will attend the event with Christian Noyer, governor of the Bank of France.

There are no plans to cancel Sarkozy’s agenda for July 28, AFP said, citing his office. Sarkozy is set to visit Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France that day, Bloomberg reports.
