Not a single organization can replace the UN in maintaining international peace and stability, President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China said here today.
Members of the UN Security Council bear important responsibility for worldwide peace and stability, the Chinese leader said, as he addressed students and lectures at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. The UN's role in preserving peace and stability remains unchanged; no other international organization can replace the UN today, Hu Jintao added.
Hu Jintao suggested enhancing the authority of this international organization in every way for the sake of asserting a new equitable world order.
Mankind now faces new threats and challenges, the Chinese leader stressed. The number of unpredictable factors, which threaten security, such as international terrorism, an inclination for unilateral actions and local conflicts, tend to increase, Hu Jintao went on to say. In his words, specific measures making it possible to counter such threats must be elaborated; this is an important task, he added.
The UN Charter and this organization's principles must be retained as fundamental norms for tackling international problems, Hu Jintao believes. In his opinion, close-knit cooperation between the international community's members is essential for ensuring a long-lasting peace.
China is ready to invigorate its cooperation with Russia and other countries of the world still further for the sake of jointly facilitating a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious life, the PRC President said in conclusion.
