Baltic ferry companies investing in new Tallinn - St. Petersburg project

Estonian ferry operator Tallink and Finnish company Silja Line intend to open a new passenger route between Tallinn and St. Petersburg. According to Estonian daily Paevaleht, Marek Magi, Tallink's investment director, has announced that the route may open as early as April-May next year. 'Although, if we had a new ship, we would put it on the new route straight away,' Magi said.

Meelis Laido, the head of Silja Line Eesti, a subsidiary of the Finnish company, said that the company plans to introduce a service between Rostock, Tallinn and St. Petersburg next summer. 'We are already working on this,' Laido added. 'We still have to resolve visa, customs and border issues, as well as drawing up a timetable.'

The level of potential investment in the new project is currently being kept under wraps. The ferry companies have also not yet released any information on ticket prices.
