Suriname: Man who rammed Dutch Prime Minister's convoy mentally unstable

A former soldier suspected of ramming his car into the Dutch Prime Minister's convoy last week has a history of mental instability, Surinamese police said Monday. The man, identified by officials only as F. Jadhoenathmisier, also has a history of alcohol and drug abuse, said police spokesman John Jones.

Jadhoenathmisier allegedly drove the car that rammed a vehicle in a convoy transporting Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende on Friday. Jadhoenathmisier was arrested at the scene and no one was injured in the collision, which caused minor damage.

Authorities said they found a handgun in Jadhoenathmisier's car. They said his 9-year-old daughter was in the vehicle next to him during the collision. Jadhoenathmisier previously served four years in prison for setting fire to the state television building, the AP reports.

Authorities said he would remain in custody, and the investigation was continuing. Balkenende was visiting Suriname to mark the South American country's 30th anniversary from the Netherlands.
