Revision Of US Nuclear Policy

The report on revision of the US nuclear policy which the Pentagon intends to publish next week will lay the foundation of a new approach to nuclear deterrence, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stated during a briefing at the US Defense Department. As he said, this new approach will combine really deep reductions of offensive nuclear arms with deployment of a anti-missile defence system which will defend the USA, its friends, allies and deployed troops from a limited attack with the use of ballistic missiles. The head of the Pentagon stressed that the publication of this document would mark a change of the approach which the USA historically displayed with regard to offensive arms. Summing up the results of his holding the post of the US Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld also noted that the programme of development and tests in the field of anti-missile defence is no longer contained by the ABM Treaty. The Secretary pointed out that this program would be fulfilled in such a way as to test the broadest spectrum of promising technologies.
