Rain continues across central, southeastern Texas; 6th death confirmed

Rain continued across central and southeastern Texas, causing minor flooding and some road closures as authorities watched for more serious problems after a weekend of rescues on rising rivers.

The heavy rain, which began Thursday night, has left at least six dead, and two men are missing and presumed dead after their vehicles were swept away by rushing water.

Waco-area authorities found the body of a woman in her car on Monday. Family members told the Waco Tribune-Herald that the 45-year-old woman was found a day after high waters apparently washed her car off a bridge on Rock Creek Road.

On Sunday, firefighters rescued more than two dozen people as the Guadalupe River spilled out of its banks in Central Texas. After taking refuge from the rain under a bridge, 17 people had to be rescued as the river rose, said Mark Reynolds, a public information officer with the Comal County Sheriff's Office.

The two men missing since Thursday disappeared when their vehicles were swept away. Authorities said 22-year-old Edgar Garcia drove his sport utility vehicle around a high-water barrier near Fredericksburg, and 50-year-old Scottie Gjedrem was moving a friend's sports car near Killeen when a swollen creek overwhelmed it. Both vehicles were found.
