New York state man lives in underground bunker

A firefighter investigating a fire in an isolated area of Buffalo, New York found a man living in a 16-foot (5-meter)-by-20-foot (6-meter) underground bunker that took him two years to dig.

Fire investigator James O'Neill told the Buffalo News that a man, a 47-year-old military veteran, slept on a foam bed, used car batteries to light his home and cooked food in a hot pot in the bunker 6 feet (1.8 meters) underground. The walls are covered with insulation and plastic tarps and the ceiling is made of wood and roofing material, he said.

"It's not the Marriott hotel by any means, but this man has made it comfortable down there," O'Neill told the newspaper. He would not reveal the man's name or location in order to protect his privacy, but said he had lived there for six years.

"Some people would call him homeless, but he's a clean, well-spoken guy," said O'Neill.
