Prison officers in England and Wales launch one-day strike

English and Welsh prison officers walked off the job Wednesday in a strike over pay and conditions that was to last a day or more, their union said.

The Ministry of Justice said the strike was illegal.

"Prison officers throughout England and Wales have started a minimum of one day's strike action, which started at 7 a.m. today," said Glyn Travis, the union's assistant secretary.
