Britain's Princess Anne met with people living with HIV in Papua New Guinea met with people living with HIV in Papua New Guinea during a brief visit to the impoverished half-island nation Thursday.

Anne was greeted by thousands of flag-waving Papua New Guineans as she arrived in the capital, Port Moresby, on Wednesday for an official visit to mark the country's 30th anniversary of independence.

She was greeted by Prime Minister Michael Somare and later attended a state reception at which she said HIV and AIDS were among the biggest challenges facing Papua New Guinea, an impoverished nation of 5 million people which lies immediately north of Australia.

The country could learn from African nations like Uganda where the HIV infection rate had fallen from 20 percent to 5 percent of the population through strong political and community leadership, she said, reports the AP. I.L.
