Russian traitor sentensed to 7 years in jail

A Russian officer was sentenced to 7 years in prison for selling state secrets to Poland, a Moscow military court announced on Monday.

Maj. Sergei Yurenya admitted to having provided Polish special services information on the location and number of soldiers based in the Moscow Military District in exchange for money, said court spokesman Alexander Minchanovsky.

Yurenya was arrested in March after trying to join the Federal Security Service, the main successor to the KGB, the spokesman said, citing testimony given during the trial by military prosecutor Ramil Shakurov.

Yurenya was recruited by Polish agents in 2005, the year after Poland joined NATO, Shakurov said. His goal was to become a double agent, he added.
