Putin expresses condolences to Spanish nation in connection with Sanguesa terrorist act

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation expressed his condolences to the people of Spain and the Spanish leadership in connection with a terrorist act that was perpetrated in Sanguesa, Navarra province the other day. He also expressed sympathy for those, who were killed and wounded there. Putin made this statement, while addressing the Russia-EU summit in St. Petersburg.

Unfortunately, our colleague, the Prime Minister of Spain, was unable to come because of this outrage, Putin told those present.

He phoned and said that he was sorry he could not be with us, the Russian head of state added.

Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar of Spain called off his trip for the Russia-EU summit in St. Petersburg the other day in connection with a terrorist act that was staged by Basque separatists.

A car bomb exploded in the center of Sanguesa, killing two people. Another person was severely wounded as a result of the blast.

Initial reports have it that this outrage was perpetrated by members of the ETA terrorist organization.

Spain's Foreign Minister Ana Palacio represents her country at the summit instead.
