Foreign diplomats started their visit to Andijan - the place of an uprising in May. The delegation invited by Uzbekistan to monitor its probe into May's violent uprising toured the site of the revolt in the country's east on Monday.
The group, comprising representatives from Russia, China, Iran, India, Pakistan and the other ex-Soviet Central Asian countries, met with officials in the city of Andijan, visited the prison where the uprising began and the main square where the violence erupted, says the AP.
Human rights advocates said up to 750 people died when government troops opened fire on unarmed civilians on May 13 in Andijan. Authorities deny that and say that 176 people died, 295 were wounded. President Islam Karimov blamed the violence on Islamic radicals - he said, the uprising was organized by one of the movements of the extremist organization Hizb-ut-Tahrir.
Western countries have called for an international probe into the violence, but the Uzbek government invited a working group of diplomats to monitor its investigation.
