A police officer pleaded not guilty to raping a 19-year-old woman at a deserted police station.
Marcus Huffman was arraigned in Providence Superior Court on a charge of first-degree sexual assault. A judge set bail at $50,000 (37,015 EUR).
Prosecutors say Huffman was on patrol when he met the woman after she was turned away from a nightclub because she appeared intoxicated. Huffman is accused of offering her a ride, then driving her to the police station, where he raped her.
Special Assistant Attorney General Erik Wallin said prosecutors have a video showing Huffman entering the station with the woman, then leaving separately before the woman did.
In addition, prosecutors say they have recovered Huffman's semen from the woman's underpants.
They also allege Huffman was among three officers who responded after the woman made an emergency call from a relative's home to report the rape.
Huffman's attorney, Raymond Angell, said he was confident the charges would be refuted.
"There's no direct evidence that any sexual assault took place," Angell told the judge.
Huffman could face as many as 10 years in prison if convicted.
