George W. Bush: UN Will Play Important Role in Restoration of Iraq

U.S. President George W. Bush said that the UN would play a vital role in the restoration of Iraq.

When speaking at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Belfast on Tuesday the U.S. President stressed that "the restoration of Iraq requires support and expertise on the part of the international community." "We adhere to international institutions including the UN," the U.S. President said.

"When we speak about the vital importance of the UN we mean its vital importance in every aspect including humanitarian aid and assistance in forming the interim government." George W. Bush added that " Iraqis are to decide who will make part of the interim authority." The interim government will rule the country until there is a real government and Iraqis elect their own authorities," the U.S. President said.

George W. Bush thanked UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for a special private commissioner he had appointed on Monday". "It is a positive move," the U.S. President said.
