Pentagon head points to Russia's role in preventing humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan

Head of the Pentagon Donald Rumsfeld has pointed to the role of Russia as a member of the international coalition in the prevention of a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.

Speaking at a briefing on Monday, the head of the American defence agency pointed out that Russia cleared and restored the Salang highlands tunnel which is the main artery linking Kabul with the north of the country.

According to the Secretary, this made it possible to deliver thousands of tons of foodstuffs, medicines and other necessities to Afghanistan.
