US and China to strangle Kim Jong-un with toughest sanctions

On March 1, the UN Security Council will vote to expand sanctions against North Korea.

On 7 January, the authorities of the DPRK announced the launch of a carrier rocket with Kwangmyŏngsŏng ("Shining Star") satellite on board. A month earlier, Pyongyang held its fourth underground nuclear test in the last ten years. UN Security Council Resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087 and 2094 prohibit the DPRK from conducting any activity related to nuclear technologies and development of ballistic missiles.

The UN Security Council set to work on a resolution to tighten sanctions against North Korea. Last week, the United States submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to expand sanctions against North Korea. It took the US and China several weeks to develop the text of the document.

The new draft resolution is said to provide for "the toughest set of sanctions" that the UN Security Council has introduced over the past 20 years. In particular, the document stipulates for mandatory inspections of all cargoes to North Korea and limits the purchase of coal, iron, gold, titanium and other raw materials and metals from the rogue country.

If adopted, the resolution will embargo the deliveries of aviation and rocket fuel to North Korea and expand financial sanctions on the banking sector.
