Dutch prime minister makes sensational statement on Ukraine

The Netherlands is opposed to Ukraine's incorporation into the European Union, Prime Minister of the Kingdom Mark Rutte said in an interview with nu.nl news website.

"Ukraine should be on good terms both with Europe and Russia. It will not be possible if Ukraine joins the EU," Rutte said.

Mark Rutte also said that Ukraine's association with the EU is not a step on the way to join the European Union.

"The Netherlands is against it, - said Rutte when answering the question about Ukraine's accession to the EU. - Opponents of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU say that the ratification would be a step towards Ukraine's accession to the EU. However, this is not the case."

The Dutch Prime Minister stated that the agreement embraces free trade, the rule of law, fight against corruption and the development of democracy.

On April 6, the Netherlands is holding a referendum on the ratification of the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

Although the results of the referendum are advisory in nature, but they may cause problems in the political circles of the Netherlands itself, as well as in the EU on the whole. More than a half of the Dutch, according to public opinion surveys, are opposed to the agreement. However, their position, as well as the views of citizens of other EU countries, were not taken into account at the conclusion of the agreement between the EU and Ukraine.
