Moldovan capital marks 58th anniversary of liberation from Nazi occupants

The Moldovan capital is marking the 58th anniversary of its liberation from the Nazi occupation.

According to the Chisinau authorities' regulation, the programme of celebrations includes laying wreaths to the Memorial of Combat Glory and the monument commemorating those fallen in Chisinau battles in the former Liberation Square which is now called Square of the United Nations Organisation.

Under the Mayor Office's regulation, district heads are to organise charitable lunches for the veterans who participated in the August 1944 operation. The Mayor Office has also allocated 50 Leus /3.7 US dollars/ to each veteran to mark the occasion.

Vice Chairman of the Moldovan Veterans' Organisation Arkady Djubinsky said that the celebrations' programme aroused sad and conflicting feelings in him. According to him, this year the event will be marked modestly.

To quote Djubinsky, this is apparently meant not to offend the opposition which, as he put it, is basically the pro-Romanian "fifth column". The veteran also emphasised that Saturday, the City's Liberation Day, had been announced a working day in view of the upcoming Independence Day and the Day of Limba Noastra /Our Language/ on August 27th and August 31st respectively.

According to Arkady Djubinsky, many veterans are therefore full of indignation, because they think that there could have been no Independence Day or the Day of Limba Noastra without the August 24th, 1944 battle.

On December 10, 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, its thirty articles enshrining basic and fundamental rights guaranteeing dignity of the human person and equality for all, regardless of race, color, creed or gender. A pipe dream?
