Federation council ratifies Shanghai antiterrorist convention

The final plenary session scheduled for Friday, December 27th, will see ratification by the majority of votes of the Shanghai Convention on suppression of terrorism, separatism and extremism, said representative of the Russian parliament's upper chamber committee for defense and security issues Viktor Ozerov at a press conference on Wednesday.

"There is no doubt that the document will be ratified," he said.

Ozerov recalled that ratification of this document would allow states, participating in the convention, exchange databases on terrorist organizations as well as information dealing with financing of these organizations.

The document also envisages "proactive revelation of terrorist organizations and channels of their financing." The Convention ratification by the Russian parliament will allow the document participants to coordinate their efforts and cooperate in order to stop any kind of terrorist activity, Ozerov explained, saying that this implied special troops and special means of the armed forces.

The Shanghai convention was signed by Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Viktor Ozerov, who had earlier returned from India with the Federation Council delegation, added that "India was considering a possibility to join the convention".

A defense committee member, Nikolai Tulayev, who also participated in the press conference, in his turn, pointed out that ratification of the document was "politically important".

"Observing the Shanghai convention will give additional guarantees to Russia's participation in the Central Asian region along with our partner, the USA," the senator explained.
