Four armed men were detained on Tuesday by the Vladikavkaz border guard unit as they attempted to cross illegally the Russo-Georgian border.
Press service head of the region's department of the Federal Frontier Service Lieutenant-Colonel Sergei Livantsov reported that the men had been apprehended at the temporary Kalak post. This is one of many such posts specially set up to enhance security on the southern border to foil any possible attempts made by militants to cross the border.
The four transgressors, according to Livantsov, were armed with foreign sub-machine guns, hunting rifles with their serial numbers filed off and knives. Binoculars and other optical devices were also confiscated. The men did not provide any identification documents or weapons' permits. They were taken to the border post for further investigation.
Over the past year, more than a hundred people have been detained by servicemen of the regional department on suspicion of being involved with illegal armed bandit formations. They have been handed over to the law-enforcement agencies.
