What Does Ariel Sharon Want from Moscow?

A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is to take place in the Kremlin today. This was reported by the press service of the Russian
president. The Israeli premier is currently on a working visit to Moscow.

The questions that are expected to be discussed during the meeting touch upon a wide range of issues: from Mideast problems to bilateral commercial relations. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly expressed his concern regarding the development of the situation in the Middle East. This subject will be definitely discussed during the meeting.

The Israeli prime minister considers Russia a superpower, which plays one of the key roles in the struggle against international terrorism. This was reported by Sharon’s personal aide Ra'anan Gissin.

The prime minister of Israel is certain that Russia plays a huge role in the struggle against international terrorism, especially after the terrorist attacks on America. Russia and Israel are also likely to discuss the Iraqi threat, Russia’s deliveries of arms and  technologies to Syria and Iran, as well as relations with the Russian Orthodox Church after the recent siege of a church in Bethlehem.

Ariel Sharon will also have a meeting with his Russian colleague, Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov. The ministers will have a closed discussion, which means that the two in will be very serious and discuss important issues for both Russia and Israel.

Therefore, why did Sharon come to Moscow? What for? For  Moscow’s support, or for his votes on the threshold of possible elections in Israel? Maybe, as experts believe, Sharon came to Russia to share secret information pertaining to the Iraq's "weapons of mass destruction."  Sharon is accompanied by Mossad cheif Ephraim Halevy. Halevy’s power is going to end at the end of October. Later, he will become the head of the Israeli National Security Council.
