Woman Gives Birth to Twin Girls at Age 62

Krasimira Dimitrova, a 62 year-old resident of Bulgaria, became a mother for the first time. She gave birth to twin girls Mary and Jaclyn.

The woman had been dreaming of having children for a long time and started to collect documents for adoption. The Bulgarian officials refused adoption because of her retirement age. Meanwhile, the woman who had an active life and continued to work as a psychologist despite of her retirement age, decided to undergo an extracorporeal fertilization procedure to become a mother.

“Doctors implanted three embryos, but only two survived,” she said.

The first seven months of pregnancy were fine, but the other day her condition worsened and doctors opted for a C-section. The doctor who assisted the labor said that it was the second time ever when an extracorporeal fertilization procedure was successful for a woman over 60.

A similar case happened in India in 2008, when a lady who said she was 70 successfully underwent this procedure and had a baby. No one saw her birth certificate and she only gave her approximate age.

Mary and Jaclyn will spend a few weeks in incubators. When the head of the Bulgarian Healthcare committee learned about the mother’s health issues, he suggested introducing amendments to the legislation limiting the age of motherhood.
