Champions League: Matchday 2 complete. 45495.jpegChelsea, Marseille, APOEL and Barcelona lead their groups at the end of matchday 2 in the Champions League. The best result of the day belongs to Barcelona, whose 5-0 drubbing of BATE Borisov in Belarus marks the difference between the teams - and we have to remember most of Barça's stars are home-grown - an example in sports management.

Today the teams in Groups EFGH played the second game. Matchday 2b is the end of the second round of the Champions League, in which the champions and best-placed teams of the strongest European Leagues take part in this millionaire competition. Matchday 2a covered groups ABCD on September 27.

Frank Lampard put Chelsea ahead in Valencia on 56' but Soldado equalised for the home side on 87' (penalty). Bender (30') and Ballack (90+1) saw off Genk in Germany.

A. Ayew scored twice for Marseille (20', 69', pen.) against Dortmund's no-reply; Arsenal went two up against Olympiakos (Oxlade-Chamberlain, 8' and André Santos, 20'). Fuster got one back for the Greeks on 27' and the score remained the same.

FC Porto started well in St. Petersburg - James Rodriguez gave the visitors the lead after ten minutes, but Zenit came back through Shirokov (20'and 63') and ex- Porto strike Danny (72'). Shakhtar and APOEL drew one apiece, Trickovski scoring for the visitors on 61' and Jadson equalising for the home team three minutes later.

Barça thrashed BATE in Belarus, the goals coming from Volodko (own goal, 19') then P. Rodriquez, 22' and Messi on 38'. After the break, Messi got his second (56') and Villa wrapped it up on 90'. For AC Milan, Ibrahimovic scored from a penalty on 53' and Cassano got the second on 66'.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are the only two clubs with a 6-point, hundred per cent record after the first two games in the Champions League. Both Manchester clubs had horrendous results on matchday 2a. CSKA Moskva lost at home to Inter, 2-3. Tomorrow the matchday is completed.

 

 

Group A

At Napoli, the game with Villarreal was over by 20 minutes. Hamsik scored after 15' and Cavani added the second two minutes later, from a penalty. Bayern also finished Manchester City in the first half, with a brace of goals from Gomez (38' and 45+1).

A great game in Moscow. Lúcio and Pazzini put Inter ahead. Dzagoev pulled one back on 45+3' and Vagner Love equalised on 77' but after 79', Zárate scored the winner. In the other game in the group,Sow acored for Lille after 30' and Colman equalised for Trabzonspor, in Turkey, after 75' (penalty).

A great result for Benfica - Bruno César scored on 40' and a 6-goal scorcher at Old Trafford, where Manchester United put two past Basel, Welbeck scoring twice on 16' and 17'. In the second half, Basel came out of the cirner fighting and equalised through F. Frei (58') and A. frei (60') before the latter horrified the home crowd with a second after 76' (penalty). Young equalised for United on 90'.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Benzema demonstrated Real's class after 25', 41' and 49', putting the game totally out of the reach of Ajax. At Lyon, Gomis (23') and B. Koné (42') took the three points away from Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb.
