Vancouver Day 5: Russia Just Misses Out Again

Two results yet from Day 4 saw the PR China get off the mark with two medals in a day-end which favoured the Far East with five out of six medals in the Pairs Free Figure Skating and Men’s Speed Skating 500 metres Race 2 of 2 finals. Russia yet again misses out of the medals, despite being in the running. What is going on?

Figure Skating – Pairs Free Skating

Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao (PR China) Gold; Qing Pan and Jian Tong (PR China) Silver; Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy (Germany) Bronze. In fourth place were Russia’s Yuko Kavaguti and Aleksandr Smirnov. In seventh, Maria Mukhortova and Maksim Trankov and in eleventh, Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov.

Speed Skating – Men’s 500m Race 2 of 2

Tae-Bum Mo (Republic of Korea) Gold; Keiichiro Nagashima (Japan) Silver; Joji Kato (Japan) Bronze. The Russian competitors were Dmitry Lobkov (14), Aleksandr Lebedev (32), Timofey Skopin (35) and Evgeny Lalenkov (36)

Women’s Biathlon 10 km pursuit

Magdalena Neuner (Germany) Gold; Anastazia Kusmina (Slovakia) Silver; Marie Laure Brunet (France) Bronze. Yet again, Russia missed out: Anna Boulygina finished in sixth and Olga Zaitseva in seventh, while Svetlana Sleptsova and Olga Medvedtseva finished in 18 th and 20 th place.

Men’s Biathlon 12.5 km pursuit
