Russian weightlifter Oxana Slivenko wins 2 gold medals setting new world record

Russia's Oxana Slivenko set a world record and landed two gold medals in the women's 69kg category at the weightlifting world championships on Monday.

Slivenko lifted 156kg to retain the clean and jerk and 120kg to take the snatch silver on her way to retaining the overall title with a world record 276kg in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The combined total bettered by 1kg the world mark set by Liu Chunhong of China at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Liu won the snatch with 121kg, 2kg shy of Slivenko's world mark, and took silver in the clean and jerk with 150kg to finish second overall with 271kg.

Slivenko, 20, swept all three titles -- clean and jerk, snatch and overall -- at the last world championships in Santo Domingo in 2006.

She now holds two of the three world records in the women's 69kg category.

Her world record was the third of the championships, which finish on Wednesday.

China top the medals table with 18 gold medals after eight days of competition, Reuters reports.

The bronze went to Natalya Davydova from Ukraine with a total 244 kg. She lifted 114 kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk.

Jeane Lassen of Whitehorse was sixth overall with a total of 233 (105 in snatch and 128 in the clean and jerk), the AP reports.
