European Athletics Championships: What a Day for Russia!

Pride of Place for Russia’s team at Barcelona’s European Athletics Championships on day 4 of six: Five Gold medals, two Silvers and three Bronze, bringing the total to nineteen medals (8 Gold, 5 Silver and 6 Bronze). Russia leads the field with almost double the number of medals won by second-placed France (10).

Friday’s haul for Russia was frankly astounding. Sergey Bakulin won the Bronze medal in the Men’s 50 km Walk with a time of 3:43:26. The first Gold of the day for Russia came in the Women’s Pole Vault Final, where Svetlana Feofanova won the first of five Gold medals, with a jump of 4.75 metres.

Another 1,2,3 in the Women’s 400 metres. Tatyana Firova won the Gold in a time of 49.89 seconds; Kseniya Ustalova took Silver with 49.92 and Antonina Krivoshapka got the bronze with 50.10.

Gold and Bronze in the Women’s 3,000 metre Steeplechase. Yuliya Zarudneva won the Gold with 9:17:57, ahead of Spain’s Marta Dominguez (9:17:74) and Bronze went to Russia’s Lyubov Kharlamanova (9:29:82).

Silver for Russia in the Women’s Hammer Throw, where Tatyana Lysenko got a throw of 75.65 metres, behind Germany’s Betty Heidler (76.38) and ahead of Poland’s Anita Wlodarczyk (73.56).

Finally two more Golds in the Women’s 400m. Hurdles - Natalya Antyukh (52.92) beat Bulgaria’s Vania Stambolova (53.82) and Great Britain’s Perri Shakes-Drayton (54.18) and finally, in the Women’s 800 metres, where Mariya Savinova (1:58:22) beat the Netherlands’ Yvonne Hak (1:58:85) and Great Britain’s Jennifer Meadows (1:59:39).
