Kosovo fails as UNESCO member

Kosovo did not manage to enter UNESCO. Partially recognized state did not gain 3 additional votes for the needed threshold. One should not possess a universally recognized status of a sovereign country to become a member of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. However, only 93 participants have agreed in Paris today to adopt a new candidate. As we reported, Serbia strongly objected such initiatives of Kosovo. Sacred places, situated in the territory of the Republic, could represent yet another problem. Orthodox values stood a good chance to get into the clutches of illegitimate Albanian administration

Aleksandr Pelin, archpriest, Chairman of the Department on Church Relations with the Society of the Russian Orthodox Church

'Politics, and especially rude genocide of the 90s, which was provoked by some countries of the West as well, led to the breakup of the former Yugoslavia into five states. Now, they try to split Syria on the religious basis as well, wiping all the sacred objects from the face of the Earth. Sacred places must be preserved, but it should be carried out with regard to the interests of all the parties.'
