A state of emergency was declared in the US State of New Mexico. A section of the dam was destroyed at Gold King Mine, leading to the leak of toxic water into the Animas River, a tributary of the San Juan.
More than 11 million liters of water with arsenic and heavy metals were released as a result of the accident. The toxic waters are now flowing to the Colorado River. The local authorities intend to allocate large funds to help the population. It was prohibited to approach the polluted rivers. People can already receive bottled fresh water, but the reserves will last for only 90 days.
