The global political discussion within the scope of the 62nd meeting of the UN General Assembly continues. The issue of the Iranian nuclear program still attracts most of attention at the meeting. The Great and Terrible President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a landmark speech at the Assembly which made headlines of all newspapers in the world. Ahmadinejad strongly denied all accusations of terrorist-supporting activities and development of nuclear weapons. He also confirmed Iran’s readiness to cooperate with the IAEA on all issues regarding the problem.
In his speech the Iranian president did his best to avoid any mentioning of his major opponent – the USA. Iran currently has to deal with the criticism from France. French President Nicolas Sarkozy stated that Iran’s nuclear weapon would seriously undermine stability in the region and in the whole world. Sarkozy believes that it is possible to extricate from the crisis with the help of diplomatic dialogue and tough political decisions.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad started his speech in a roundabout way. He stressed out the need to improve the current situation in the world and open brighter perspectives for nations. This goal can be achieved only if the international community solves vital problems including: “organized attempts to destroy the institute of family and weaken the status of women.” The president continued the list with “widely spread violations of human rights, terrorism and occupation,” “aggression against national cultures and values” and “ineffectiveness of international mechanisms that are meant to restore stable peace and security.”
Ahmadinejad’s analysis of global issues of modern times came complete with problems of Jews and Holocaust. He particularly said that the ongoing occupation of Palestine by “illegal Zionist regime” was a compensation of all those losses, [which Jews] suffered during the war in Europe. “Zionists have been destroying Palestinians in their own homes and towns, but terrorists are awarded medals of peace and enjoy the support of the great nations,” the Iranian president said.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not repeat his famous statement in which he claimed that “Israel should be wiped off the face of the Earth.” However, at a press conference after the meeting he predicted a dismal end to the Jewish state: “The Soviet Union – where is it now? It collapsed and disappeared. Was it achieved as a result of the war? No,” he said.
Speaking about other occupied territories Ahmadinejad spoke about Iraq. He stated that the operation against Saddam Hussein had been conducted on the assumption of his possession of weapons of mass destruction. “The Iraqi dictator, who was supported by the occupants, was toppled. No WMDs were found, but the occupation continues,” he said.
Ahmadinejad laid the responsibility for the current situation on the UN Security Council. He stated that the Security Council ranks first when it comes to inefficient international organizations. “Some of its members act like prosecutors, judges and executioners,” the Iranian president said. “No wonder that the countries, which try to defend their rights and freedoms, do not try to receive what they deserve from the UN Security Council,” he continued.
Speaking about the notorious nuclear program, the president of Iran stated that Teheran, as a member of the IAEA, always observed its rules and instructions and developed cooperation with the agency on all levels. “All our nuclear activities are of peaceful and transparent character,” he said. However, as Ahmadinejad continued, some of constant UN Security Council members attempted to deprive Iran of its nations by means of tough pressure shown on the IAEA. “The Council failed to vindicate justice and defend the rights of the Iranian nation,” Ahmadinejad said speaking about the sanctions imposed against the country for its refusal to suspend uranium-enrichment works.
The state of affairs started changing recently. “The question of the nuclear program of Iran has returned back to the IAEA, and I can officially proclaim that, as we believe, the Iranian nuclear problem is closed and became a common point in agency’s work,” Ahmadinejad said.
“Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in New York wishing to surprise the world with his friendliness and to let everyone know that Iran is ready to cooperate with the IAEA on all levels,” specialist for the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nina Mamedova, told the Vremya Novostei newspaper. These words have become the most positive result of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s staying in the USA.
George W. Bush did not pay that much attention to Iran as the general public thought he would. Most likely, Bush and Sarkozy have previously coordinated their actions and statements for the UN General Assembly to emphasize the amicability of the US president.
