Hundreds of Thousands Rendered Homeless in Bangladesh

With almost a million people impacted, Bangladesh's flood season is far from over

Despite the decrease of water level of two major river basins Brahmaputra and Ganges -erosion and washing out of embankments in central and northern parts of the Bangladesh by the flood continued till Monday, rendering hundreds of thousands people homeless in those areas.


On top of this, the scientist of the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARSO) warned of a fresh flood next month. Both the Brahmaputra and Padma have seen the water level drop at two points.  But with the recession of flood water, the sufferings of the people of the flood affected areas are increasing in the form of water
borne disease.

 

Erosion gripped fresh areas in the countries northern part with the falling of the water level. The flood situation in the central part of the country including greater Dhaka has remained unchanged. However, weather experts expect an improvement in the coming days with the waters to flow further low to the Bay of Bengal.

 

The Flood Warning Centers (FWC) informed that the major rivers were flowing above the danger levels in 14 cm out of 85 cm monitoring points. The Dhaka water and sewerage authority (WASA) have started pumping out stagnant water trapped inside the Dhaka protection dam in the place of Ryer Bazer .Six pumps were being used round the clock to get rid of the floodwater, a senior official said this reporter.
