Results of the Seven Wonders of the World

In Lisbon’s Stadium of Light, the results of the Seven Wonders of the World contest have been announced in a cerimony which brought together stars in the worlds of international politics and show business. Over one hundred million people took part in the competition, which chose sites in three Asian countries, three in Latin America and one in Europe.

The Great Wall of China, Petra (Jordan), Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Macchu Pichu (Peru), Chichen Itza (Mexico), the Colisseum in Rome (Italy) and the Taj Mahal (India) won the competition, voted for by over one hundred million people around the world.

The remaining candidates were Russia’s Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral, Red Square, Hagia Sofia (Turkey), Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany), Acropolis in Athens (Greece), Sydney Opera House (Australia), Gize Pyramids (Egypt), Easter Island Statues (Chile), Statue of Liberty (USA), Alhambra (Spain), Stonehenge (UK), Angkor (Cambodia), Timbuktu (Mali), Kiyomizu Temple (Japan) and the Eiffel Tower (France).

Many famous figures from the Portuguese political world and the international showbusiness curcuit were present at the cerimony in the football stadium of SL Benfica, Lisbon: Portuguese President Anibal Silva, Prime Minister Jose Socrates, US astronaut Neil Armstrong, ex-UNO Secretary General Kofi Annan, Jennifer Lopez, Hillary Swank, Ben Kingsley and many others.

1.6 billion people watched the show, broadcast to over 170 countries.
