Vojislav Seselj to Fight in the Hague - 25 February, 2003

Leader of the Serb Radical party Vojislav Seselj was recently taken into custody in an investigation jail in the Hague. The decision on the arrest was taken by the International Tribunal for former Yugoslavia.

Seselj was detained in the international airport of the Hague right after his arrival in the Netherlands.

Several days ago, the leader of Serb patriots and companion-in-arms of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic declared his intention to voluntarily give himself up to the UN Tribunal in the Hague. He said he reached the decision as he didn’t feel safe in Serbia.

The leader of the Serb Radical party Vojislav Seselj, 48, is blamed for “crimes against humanity” (there are eight indictments on  the whole) during civil wars in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, for violation of the conventions and rules of waging a war, etc. The indictments concern the period when Vojislav Seselj was a field commander.

At a farewell meeting in the center of Belgrade that gathered thousands of people the leader of the Serb Radical party said that he was ready for long legal proceedings and intended to prove his innocence in the Hague; he also added he would fight for all Serbs who fought against the new world order but who are now prosecuted by the Hague “justice”. Seselj said he hoped to become “the last Serb who would appear before the Tribunal.” He is also ready to act as a witness for the prosecution at a trial against former president of the Yugoslav republic Slobodan Milosevic, if Milosevic asks him.

As Russian television ORT informs, a splendid seeing-off was organized for Vojislav Seselj.
