World Food Program Gives Aid to Chechen Refugees

The United Nations World Food Program has decided to increase food aid for the internally displaced persons in Chechnya and the neighboring republic of Ingushetia, due to the precarious situation in the area caused by groups of Chechen terrorists and foreign mercenaries.

24,000 tons of food will be distributed to 290,000 people during the coming year. Saeed Malik, WFP Director for Eastern Europe, declared to journalists that “food aid is the only certainty in the lives of these people” due to the instability caused by the terrorists.

85 thousand Chechens are living in neighboring Ingushetia, while 160,000 Chechens are displaced within Chechnya itself. 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.
