Smoking may aggravate the course of chronic hepatitis C irrespectively of the level of alcohol consumption. This fact was revealed by French researchers after examining the state of health of 244 patients. They recommend people suffering from chronic hepatitis C to give up smoking or reduce the number of cigarettes smoked daily in order to minimize the harm.
The research was held by doctors from the hospital of Henry Mondor. They studied connection between the microanatomical signs of chronic hepatitis activity in liver and smoking. 152 men and 92 women at the average age of 45.9 years participated in the experiment. The people provided information about their smoking within the past six months and within the previous years.
Average or acute activity of hepatitis was registered with 62% of non-smokers and with 81.7% of people smoking over 15 cigarettes per day. A similar regularity was also registered when information about smoking within the previous years was studied. A similar activity of hepatitis was registered with 59% of non-smokers as compared with the 84.6% of those people who smoked over 20 boxes of cigarettes per year.
