The first hundred of heavy freight trains have delivered cargoes to the ports of Primorye (Maritime Territory) since full electrification of the Primorye section of Transsib (the Trans-Siberian railway mainline). Head of the Far Eastern railway road Viktor Popov has told RIA Novosti this Monday that after electrification of the entire Trans-Siberian railway mainline completed on December 25, 2002, the weight of freight trains has risen two-fold (to an average of 6,000 tons) and the speed of heavy cargo trains has increased to about 125 kilometers per hour.
Since the start of the year cargo turnover handled by the Trans-Siberian railway mainline has risen by 10 per cent; trains full of coal, timber and metal that come to the ports of Nakhodka, Vladivostok, Vanino and others across the Trans-Siberian railway mainline are unloaded according to stable schedules. Coal, timber and petroleum products are loaded one day ahead of the schedule.
In the coming five years the volume of export and import transport cargo operations with the countries of Asia and the Pacific in the Russian Far East will grow to 125 million tons per annum according to experts.
