During an interview with Taleban prisoners of war in Kalajangui prison, ten kilometres from Mazar-i-Sharif, a British journalist was attacked by a group of men, one of whom blew himself up with a grenade, killing the Taleban’s Northern Alliance captors. Chaos quickly spread throughout the prison as the 300 to 400 foreign Taleban fighters spearheaded a shoot-out.
The prisoners taken with the fall of Kunduz were transported to this prison under the orders of General Rashid Dostum, whose forces put down the rebellion with the aid of British and US Special Forces and US military aircraft.
It is reported that there may be up to 700 dead as a result of the incident. The United States TV channel, ABC, confirms a report from an Afghan interpreter, Ulugbek Orgashev, that the first US victim was claimed in this war, a CIA collaborator who was killed in the firefight. These claims are denied by sources close to the US secret services.
