Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip left Australia today after a 5 day tour marking the Commonwealth Head of Governments Meeting in Brisbane, Australia. The meeting was a solemn occassion to mark the 50th annivesary of our Queen's ascension to the throne. Australia is a monarchy. In accordance with the Constitution Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of Australia and even holds Australian citizenship. Apart from formal speeches, delegated devoted a lot of their time to the recent developments in Zimbabwe. President Robert Mugabe has been ruling Zimbabwe (a.k.a. Rhodesia) with an iron fist for the last 20 years and is unwilling to quit. His policy of confiscating farms owned by White citizens brought Zimbabwe to the verge of hunger. All opposition is physically suppressed and political killings are commonplace. The leader of the opposition was charges with treason - a capital crime in Zimbabwe. Australia is one of the English-speaking countries which demand an immediate, strong action against the Mugabe dictatorship. Our position is, however, undermined by a number of African states. Their rulers seem to prefer an 'African' style of government in Zimbabwe to be accepted and tolerated. Commonwealth leaders are expected to issue a statement criticizing Mr. Mugabe, but no action would be taken against his excesses. In like with the current fad, the Commonwealth meeting was surrounded by excessive security arrangements. The Army and Police were there, SAS special forces were there with helicopter gunships and a squadron of jet fighters ready to shoot down any suspicious airliner. Nothing happened.
