Two artillery shells fired during fighting in Afghanistan's civil war landed on Tajik territory

Two artillery shells fired during fighting in Afghanistan's civil war landed on Tajik territory, a border official said Tuesday. The incident on Monday came amid fears expressed by regional and international leaders that the fighting in Afghanistan could spread to other Central Asian nations, Afghanistan's ruling Taliban faction is battling an alliance of opposition groups occupying a sliver of territory along the country's northern border with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Both sides in the conflict use tanks and heavy weapons, the “Associated press” informs. The shells exploded about 150 meters from the border, a spokesman for a Russian border guard unit said on condition of anonymity. Nobody was hurt, but the stray ordinance poses a risk to residents along the border, he said. Three other cases of Afghan artillery shells striking Tajik territory have been recorded this year, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency.
