A US nuclear-powered submarine was spotted in Avacha bay during a headquarters exercise involving elements of the north-eastern formation of Russia's Armed Forces. That Los Angeles-class submarine was detected in Avacha bay near the Kamchatka Peninsula's eastern coast, subsequently leaving Russian territorial waters, after being followed by Russian warships, Alexander Peletsky, spokesman for the north-eastern formation, noted. The north-eastern formation's high command believes that the US sub was trying to spy on Russian forces involved in the exercise.
The afore-said headquarters exercise was conducted under the supervision of Admiral Victor Fedorov, who commands the Russian Navy's Pacific fleet, involving more than 10,000 servicemen and 5,000 civilian specialists, as well as 15 warships and submarines, 10 supply ships, 20 aircraft and helicopters. Air-defense elements, radio-electronic warfare units and chemical-weapons (CW) units also took part in these war games, which aimed to sum up the results of the winter-time combat-training season.
