The United Nations welcomes Russia's decision to allocate 11 million US dollars for extraordinary humanitarian operations in the framework of the UN World Food Program in Angola and North Korea, a source in the UN Information Center in Moscow told RIA Novosti on Monday.
According to James Morris, the Executive Director of the World Food Program, "a contribution as substantial as this will enable us to lend vitally important aid to millions of starving people in two of the planet's most needy countries." "We welcome Russia's accession to the ranks of our donors and hope for long-term cooperation," he added.
The sum Russia allocated for the UN program for North Korea amounts to 10 million US dollars and will be spent on Russian wheat, with deliveries due to begin in early August. Russia's aid to North Korea, in its turn, will allow to lend food aid to 6.4 million of North Koreans until October. In Angola, the aid /including Russian aid/ will go to 1.5 million people, said RIA Novosti's source.
