As of 10:00 a.m. today Moscow time, the Central Election Commission had counted 99% of ballots cast in the Russian presidential election, Aleksandr Veshnyakov, the commission chairman, announced at a press conference here at commission headquarters. He gave these figures: for Vladimir Putin, 71% of the total, or 48,918,513 votes; for Nikolai Kharitonov, 13.7%; for Sergey Glazyev, 4.1%; for Irina Khakamada, 3.8%; for Oleg Malyshkin, 2%; and for Sergey Mironov, 0.8%. The proportion voting against all the candidates was 3.5%. The turnout was 64.3%.
Veshnyakov reported that the highest percentages of support for Putin came from voters in Ingushetia (98.2%), Kabardino-Balkariya (96.5%) and Dagestan (94.6%).
