A Russian helicopter crashed into the Sea of Okhotsk during joint rescue exercises with Japan on Thursday, and the Interfax news agency reported that one of the 13 people aboard was killed.

The Mi-14 helicopter went down near the island of Sakhalin during exercises simulating an emergency response to an oil spill and aid to stricken ships, Russian media reported.

All 13 crew members were rescued from the aircraft, but three were injured and Interfax reported that the one of them, the crew commander, died on the way to a hospital on shore. The report cited regional emergency officials, who could not immediately be reached for comment, reports the AP.
